Re: Hard freeze in Arizona

I was hunting dove in Mexico a few years ago (won't go back now!). One morning it was about 45. I put on a jean jacket. The Mexican kids showed up in parkas and heavy gloves.

I paid $44 for a bull barreled Mark I in a pawn shop years ago. I still shoot it. It still shoots good.

Re: Hawes "Western Marshall" .44 magnum

Those Hawes pistols were made in Germany and were very nicely made, they were prised during their day. Herter imported a similar, but not identical gun. The Hawes pistol is the only .44 Mag I have ever fired. That was a long time ago. The pistol was new. They'll roll back in your hand, kick hard. I'...

Re: Which would you get

There are so many really fine .22's out there that I'd spring for the .44 mag in my new Low Wall, which makes a very nice hunting rifle as will as interesting plinker/SASS rifle. If I was to buy a new 22 I'd spring for the Marlin 39a. They are pretty expensive now, so I'd probably go to a few gun sh...

Three degress F this morning, but in Oregon we undertand the cold. If it's cold I put on another layer of clothing. We dig our pipes down deep and shut off irrigation systems and blow them out in the fall. If you have a pool, toss in a few logs. Here we drain them (But who wants a pool anyway?). You...

Re: Win. Model 88, .308

Just checked my rifle out and it does indeed have the early 1955 elements as far as I looked. Early magazine, early ejection opening and the clover leaf rear of the receiver. I'm going to struggle with Photobucket to see if I can make my pics smaller to fit into this site. I think my M100 is first y...

Re: Goin' old school...

Thanks Nath. Nope. Extractors only. I don't mind though. I prefer to not litter the duck blind or clays range. First off, nice shotgun. A real beauty. I also agree about the advantage of extractors only. You just pluck them out and don't have to fiddle around searching for the empties in the grass....

Of all of the issues that we had to deal with during the VN War, Dear John letters were some of the worst. There was just no way to consol a man whose wife had just told him to take a leap. Especially when his affection for his wife/family were his saving grace when things got tough. During the VN f...

Re: Win. Model 88, .308

Steve, I tried to post a pic but it was too wide. Don't know how to shrink it. My 88 with a 13,000 S# appears to have a replacement stock. Has the early magazine as you describe...has Winchester printed on the bottom. It shows much more wear that does the rest of the rifle. The screw that holds the ...

Re: Every man a 1000 yd sharpshooter?

Really good long range shooting is a talent. It is just not that easy and while neat equipment helps, the shooter still has to have that certain something behind the trigger. When I joined the Marine Corps I thought I'd be the best shooter in the company. Not so. No matter how hard I tried some guys...

Re: New Winchester (Miroku) 1873

Miroku needs to engrave the caliber, in script, on the bottom of the brass lifter. I think the rifle looks neat. A bit spendy tho. I have an original which is my go to '73 in 32/20. But if I didn't have it, I might spring for one of the Japanes Winchesters. I own two Miroku Charles Daley O/U shotgun...

I ruined an old 73 32/20 trying to have it relined. Wish I had known about this outfit then. Today the rifle would be worth $3,000. Oh well.

Will they reline an original 50/70 Sharps rifle too?

Re: SA Revolver Options - need some insight

Run, don't walk to your nearest gun store and buy a Ruger .22/22 mag. You will shoot that pistol for the rest of your life. The .22 LR makes a great plinker and the .22 mag is a powerful and a potentially dangerous round. The fun of owning a revolver is shooting it. Having a great .22 makes shooting...

I shoot a Ruger No 1 in 45/70 with Remington half jacketed bullets. The rifle, being light, kicks hard and shoots hard too. Are folks using 45/70s in Africa now? I've been on Safari in Africa, but was armed with a 35mm camera. Lots of one shot kills.

Brought my new 88 in 308 home yesterday. Came with new Leupold scope, nice one piece mounts and nice rings. Metal like new, wood nearly so. S# in the 13,000 range which places it in 1955. Strangly no checkering. So what have I got here? A redone gun? If so the work is fantastic. No wobbly reflection...
