That's a bit unusual ......on the fuel tank strap breaking.....my guess it broke at the connecting point......all that salt they use on the road......... T-Bone...I have a new unmounted variable Weaver and several 2x and 4x along with those neat flip over mounts. These early variables had a thingy on the side that you unscrew and make your adjustment.

The Winchester box is called the "1935 Box"...made in multiple calibers from 1935-1940 so yours is obviously from introduction of the model 70 to 1940.

The Western box fits in the same time frame but I don't have the books for that to narrow it down to year or years.

Ya know Jay...my apologies.....my priorities are different than yours.....I too, would use the 300 BO for DEER as I believe it's a better round than the 223 for short range deer hunting....much better......it's just that I don't seriously hunt anymore and I look at an AR gun for getting other things...

I can't warm up the the 300 B.O.....to me it's nearly worthless except as a short range deer gun...or maybe a silenced neighborhood ground hog gun......I'd much rather have a .223 with its superior penetrating power. You ought to try shooting the 300 B.O. past 200 meters........ Yep...colder today.....
