Re: Designing a new modern Lever gun ?
I don't think I could improve much on the design of the Browning BLR, except for such details as the finish and the front sight. I like the Savage 99, too, but don't own one, so am not familiar with all its details. It was a Lightning BLR, in 1997, that caught my eye, and turned my attention toward ...

I paid close attention when the .40 S&W was being developed. One very important goal was to be ballistically very close to the 185-grain .45 ACP load, to allow something much like .45 ACP to be chambered in double-stack pistols with short enough chambers to allow folks with normal-sized hands to...

Re: any trailer park residents?
I could certainly live in a trailer, temporarily, anyway, if I had another place, such as rented storage, to keep some of my things. This second location would be more for security than anything else; not wanting all my eggs in one basket. After all, I do live on the Gulf Coast, as in Gulf of Mexico...

KirkD, great photo, and I thoroughly enjoyed the write-up. Thanks! Especially interesting was using the antique route to get around restrictive gun laws. I am glad you found this solution! As for the 5.5" barrel, I do like this length for a PPP. If I ever special-order a factory SA PPP, or comm...

Gentlemen, thanks for an interesting thread! I have nothing to offer, of course, except a lamentation that there is so little wilderness in which to go on a walkabout with a rifle, far from a road. My home state of Texas is particularly short of such places.

GP100, adjustable sights, 4" to 6" barrel. There are times that a rifle or shotgun simply cannot be practical to carry. The LEOSA permits me to have a loaded handgun more places than a loaded long gun. If LEOSA were ever to be repealed, handgun carry reciprocity laws would still allow me t...

I'll second Doc's recommendation to carry a small spare gun with an SAA or other SA sixgun. (BTW, guys, what is an SSA?) When I toted revolvers, it tended to be two of them, anyway. I have read on the 24hourcampire of Z-hat rebarreling BLRs. Nothing wrong with Saigas, except that they are a bit vertically-built. I still like the slimness of a Mini-14, and its line-of-sight being so close to the bore axis.

Look into who owns that "abandoned" shooting range. Perhaps you can become the new guy in charge?
What irks me about local ranges is all the rules, which seem to only favor slow-fire shooting at bullseyes.

Texas DPS used Minis for years, and the troopers of my acquaintance liked them. When my agency was researching which carbines to let us carry on duty, the only thing "wrong" to be found with Minis was that the op rod tended to break after 160,000 rounds, among the DPS Minis. One-hundred si...

True. You will be handing those extra guns out to former gun haters who have had a change of heart. One item to think about is handiness. In a defensive situation, you'd just be sitting there and it wouldn't matter how heavy the gun or ammo is, so a nice heavy .308 battle rifle is just the th...
