Re: OK, Pretend it's 1939, and you have to choose a rifle

Got bored and thought this might be fun. Pretend it's 1939, and you just landed a summer job, watching over a herd of sheep, in the high country. You will be horse back, and you will be gone all summer, without the luxury of resupply, everything will be carried on your horse, or in the one wagon yo...

I hope the new stuff chronographs like the old stuff. More than once, when a gunwriter posted his results with various factory snubby loads, the 125-grain standard velocity Nyclad was true to its advertised velocity, while +P 125-grain stuff, for all its noise, was moving slower than the Nyclad. Interesting! I am not sure I need a .45-70 lever rifle, but except for the oversized lever loop, this one looks good to me, and would be my pick of the current big-bore Marlins. Now, for the same features in a Trapper-length .357 1894, please!

I have a Marlin 1894CB in .357 mag, and a pre-keyhole S&W M649, both on layaway at the local enabler, so I reckon I will start with those. Having finally finished building an AR around a Colt HBAR upper receiver I bought in 2007, I could use a lighter-barreled flat-top upper receiver unit which ...

No peeing contest intended; we are on the same page, overall. :) And, I believe in keeping the weapon up and oriented toward the target, too, at least until the decision is made to let it hang and go to pistol. FWIW, the Magpul Dynamic DVDs present the "S.P.O.R.T.S." malfunction clearance,...

While the definition of "carbine" is not set in stone, in the context of AR15 rifles, excluding other weapons, the ones with 20" and longer barrels are usually considered rifles, and the 16" and under weapons carbines. A longer-barreled weapon can be equipped with a collapsible s...

I am not O.S.O.K., but the buffer tube is indeed different if you are going to use a collapsible stock. In total layman's terms, there is a rib along the bottom of the carbine-type buffer tube. OK, three BLRS in .308, and a Marlin 1894C in .357 mag. That is what I have right now, and anything in the southern tier of the lower 48 would be in danger of dying if shot by .357 or .308, assuming the right bullet construction. Four different rifles, I presume, was the question, so, to "play,...
