Malamute,
Those are great pics of some great guns. I've used the one of your 29 as computer background for quite a while.
What caliber is the 94? What loads do you use for your grouse shooting?

It's really a shame that Paco's book on levers is way out of print. I have a copy and it is packed with good round ball data. He even loads some to over 2400 feet! He of course does a lot with the cat sneeze loads too.

There is also quite a bit of bullet energy absorbed by the bullet itself when it expands.
If you want a bullet with lots of penatration, cast 'em. Cast out of linotype or some such will give little to no expansion and will drill.

Don,
Joe is correct. Hammer fit can be overdone. Of all the millions of levers out there, few have tightly fitting parts/hammers.
I'd say go for it yourself. Get in there and do your best. I bet it'll work out fine. If not, it can always go to a 'smith and get fixed.

Even at .002 clearence you'll find plenty of wobble. If I was doing the work, I'd start with a reamer that's .0005 over the very nicely finished & polished screw. Then go to .001 over if it was needed.
