Wow! What a story, lifetime dream for a lot of us. Silly question, what would just one hunt for a buff cost? I looked at an Alaskan Moose hunt and it was $12K not counting mounting the head and all. The big Marlin is the way to go either way.

Have posted this on other sites but I love this Krag, whoever did it did it right. Has the old Weaver K4, trigger breaks like glass and it shoots easily 1 1/4" at a 100. Barrel slugs at .308 so it could be an 03 barrel.

I use a different tack, my Mail Mart gal is great, I pay $7.00 extra and she packs it complete with correct box and packing. With her doing it and insurance I have never even had a question, well worth the 7 bucks plus she is cute as heck.

I sand smooth, whisker the stock(wet it, raises the grain with heat from hair dryer then cut back with 400, do that twice). Then I fill with Tru-oil thinned 50/50 with mineral spirits until all filled. Then stain to your desire, let dry 48 hours then finish any way you want. Here is a pic of a Win 2...

I do a lot of stocks for guys who like the old Winchester look and I use a 50/50 mix of red mahogany and dark walnut, gives just a hint of red. I would fill the grain first then stain if I were doing it. the French red mentioned is also great. You are on the right track and have fun.

Friend of mine guided him on an elk hunt in the rockies some years ago. He said he is the real deal, great guy, good sport and can shoot. Also said he likes good whiskey but knows when to quit, just one of the boys.

I'm just starting on the .45 Colt trail, bought a Thunderer 3 1/2", Remington brass just got here from Cabelas and dies are on the way. The Rem brass seems stout to me, I use Starline for .45 auto and never had a problem. They are nice folks to deal with too.

Anybody have some 30-40 Krag brass or ammo for sale? Bought one just cuz was my first rifle and the only time I ever saw my Dad shoot a gun. He didn't like guns but supported me all I wanted in hunting and shooting. I was nuts for buying it but sure miss Dad and any memory is a good one.

If you don't like slings you've never spent much time in the Rockies climbing up and down boulders as big as jeeps to get where you are going. Depends on the terrain I suppose but here you gotta hava a sling.

I like the forum but think it is too cluttered with everyone's list of interests and their guns. I like talking lever guns and hunting with them etc. With the new political environment I don't want every gun I own posted for all to see. Just my 2 cents worth.

You can also mix dark walnut and red mahogany stain 50/50 and get that red look on walnut stocks. Have done a bunch and they look great. Have fun.

Hey trapshooter! I am too, 125,000 registered and I'm 66 yrs old now and love my 336 too. Mine is a 30-30 but am wanting a .444 or a .35 if I could find one. They are scarce here in Colo for some reason but have my eye on a nice .444. I still shoot a receiver sight(Lyman) but a scope is needed soon....

Have had this 336 for many years and walked a lot of timber with it. 150 gr. Hornady, 34grs of H-335, 4 shots 3 bucks. Going to try the 130gr Speer and use my 340 for Antelope next year(if I draw). All good. Love the ole 30-30.
