I own and have read One Second After. I also read Lights Out when it was in PDF form. Both are based on EMP, however from wht I remember the Lights Out version the characters seem to more prepared. Both are very good reading.

In the first pic, is that a Specter or Spooky? Are either of these the same as Puff the Magic Dragon. I know one was a C-130 and the other was a C-47 if I'm not mistaken. The one in the picture appears to be the latter but i always forget the nickname for them.

Well Steve I certainly understand your disappointment. I considered getting a Uberti 73 but after find out from everyone here that they dont handle a steady diet of 357s well I too had to forgo the idea. Like you said, they are beautiful rifles but not quite a 92 when it comes to strength. RustyJr

I tested it for myself to make sure it was true, but if you fire steel cased ammo in an AR and then shoot brass behind it, it causes the brass to stick. Haven't heard anything as to the fit and finish of them but the new 86/71 from Pedersoli looks very similar except they have a half mag tub instead of a button mag. Once I start hearing more about them I may get one if anything said about them is good.

I wonder if soaking one of those powder filled cannon balls in a bucket of oil would "deactivate" the powder charge and make it safe as decoration? Any body know if this would work or if there is a way to "deactivate" them safely?

Given your requirements I would say that it is possible to pick one gun but not one load. As far as cartridges go my vote goes to the 270 winchester. Load it with a 110 vmax for varmints . . . 130 grain for deer and 150 for elk or anything else in that size range. While it wont handle the heavy bull...

I agree with el chivo in regards to the 410. If he can handle it well enough to take birds with it id say he can handle it in the deer woods. Set him up with a good slug, keep it to 25 yrds and tell him to punch it through the lungs. Im sure he would be fine.

The problem is that while hits beyond 300 meters is entirely possible the catridge itself was not designed to be used past 300. Add to this the fact that the current issue bullet weight is heavier than original specs and it is also being fired from a shorter barrel you have a recipe for failure. Rus...
