El Chivo, what purpose are you wanting to fill with the "automatic"? I like my 44 sixgun for hunting and woodsbumming but I prefer a semi-auto for daily carry and self-defense. I carry a Glock 23 in 40S&W. The compact size makes it easier to carry than a full size yet its easier to be ...

Judging by the vent rib on the barrel I'd say that it has a screw-in choke. Looked like a semi-auto with a magazine extension. Most certainly seemed effective. I think that a 30-30 placed in the same place ( a touch back of the boiler room) would have probably resulted in the same results. I think that the lack of proper shot placement, not the cartridge were to blame for not recovering the deer. IMHO

If I were to need a long gun for big bear defense it would either be a 45-70 guide gun or a remington 870 with a rifled slug barrel and slugs. And of the two I think I just might pick the 870. I'll have to side with those that for glocks. While I think a 1911 looks better and sometimes even feels better in the hand, my compact model 23 in 40S&W "feels" good when im carrying concealed and the unmatched reliability "feels" pretty good too.

I'd say the 444 would be a very versitale cartridge for most game. However for small game and woodsbumming I think a Marlin or Win 92 in 357 would be about perfect for what your talking. Light enough recoil to be enjoyable to shoot yet powerful enough to take deer and hogs all day long.

I'd suggest staying away from the Remington stuff that has "SPS" marked on it. The stocks they use are too flimsy in my opinion. I have a SPS Tactical and the rubber stock comes in contact with the barrel if you put to much pressure on the front.
