Re. the photo, it seems this was taken by a Kodiak guide, either Bill Pinnell or Morris Talifson, on a hunt where they found the bones. Probably back a few decades, no later than the 60's. It may be from the book "Last of the Great Brown Bear Men," so I'll see if I can find out more.

I'm taking this plunge myself. I opted to start with a mid-level .54 smooth rifle kit from Sitting Fox. I did not want to spend extra to get ultra-nice wood, since there's a fair chance I'll be screwing something up on my first attempt. If all else fails pipe clamps and duct tape will work :D

Yeah I'm not entirely sure what would happen if a .450 bullet went through the choke. It would probably just get swaged down by the lands, and the spin would be neutralized. The only way I'm going to find out is if some bruin interrupts a ptarmigan hunt.
