Re: My Latest Leatherwork- Lot of Pictures

Nice work. I wish I had a talent.
Do you make custom holsters? I'm looking to have a Frog holster made for my Savage & North. Could you make it from a tracing of the gun:

Re: unusual shotgun

I'd say the pic of the Greener GP Gun Take-Down Shotgun in the above link is the closest. Why is it called a "take-down"? I noticed on the gun that I saw that the hammer, when lowered, just barely hit the edge of the firing pin. I'm guessing there'd be some markings hidden if I took it apa...

Re: unusual shotgun

I collect and shoot black powder revolvers, but this shotgun intrigued me (I know little about shotguns). I'd like to take it apart just to see what makes it tick, but not for that price. The hammer and trigger did not work (broken springs?) and the firing pin prevented the lever from being worked u...

Re: unusual shotgun

That looks like the gun - I wish I had taken a pic of it. They were asking $195 for it and it needed some work.
Thanks for the info.

unusual shotgun

I saw an antique shotgun in NH today and I'm trying to find some info on it. It is single shot, with a lever action (rolling block?) and a Damascus barrel (I think, anyways). There is a small thumb switch on the right side (safety?) but there are no markings on it other than a serial number on the l...

Re: OT- Old Wild West Show photos. (Need Help!)

Great pics. I live in MA, and lately I've been researching Buffalo Bill's visit to my part of the country. He was in the area in the 1890s, and was actually in the next town over from mine in 1896 (Newburyport, Ma). I went to the library and looked up that day in the newspaper and it was amazing how...

Re: Savage & North

Thanks for the help and suggestions (I'm going to try and locate that NRA article) Savage & North update: I had to do it again...I had to shoot it once more. I brought it to the range. This time it was adjusted nice and tightly, with the cylinder snug against the forcing cone at full cock. The o...

Re: Savage & North

I figured out how the thimble/pressure plate piece of the Savage & North works; the slot does turn and is used to adjust the cylinder/barrel fit. It works great, too. I heated it and used a break-free spray and it came apart in three pieces. The part with the slot is actually a locking collar - ...

Re: Savage & North

This one, serial #1021, has no military markings that I can find (the Whitney pictured next to it has quite a few). I recently bought a book, CIVIL WAR SMALL ARMS OF THE U.S. NAVY AND MARINES, which is pretty informative. It looks like approx 20,000 of these revolvers were made, most going to the mi...

Re: Savage & North

New info on the Savage & North: I emailed David Chicoine (Gunsmithing Guns of the Old West) yesterday and asked him about that slot in the pressure plate. He responded today (impressive and timely response): "Hi Dave, Yes, I am familiar with the Savage & North although it has been a goo...

Re: Savage & North

This is the gun with the ring pulled back. The two screws to the right hold the hand in place. The toggle is attached to the screw behind it (1st screw on left, under the hammer), and is bent upwards. When I release the ring that toggle will push forward against the pressure plate. http://i37.tinypi...

Re: Savage & North

Thanks for replying. Inside the gun there is a toggle that the rounded end of the pressure plate fits into. When you cock the ring, this toggle moves backwards (actually bends as if hinged, on that screw that you noted), and the pressure plate and cylinder follow. Release the ring and the toggle pus...

Savage & North

I recently bought a Savage & North .36 that is in working condition (I fired it off last week). But I have a question concerning this revolver for anyone familiar with this gun: when you pull back on the ring and cock the hammer, the cylinder moves backwards, and when you release the ring the cy...
