Good job. I've been thinking of doing that to my Winchester 71. I really don't like the pistol grip stock. It's either going to be straighten it, or sell it. I dislike it that much. May be simpler to get a straight lever from an 86, but I don't know if they directly interchange. You have the shorter...

I copied the pic and blew it up some, I'm leaning towards the pistol being a Colt double action (either a New Service or 38 frame size), look at the shape of the frame just above the grips, and the hammer profile. The grip shape isn't quite right for an older Smith either. He may also have his right...

Hobie, your guy is looking sort of familiar. I have a buddy that has the personal effects of another friend of Cody's, he rode in the Wild West show, and was personal friends with him. Once when my buddy was here visiting, we were looking at post cards, and he recognised the guy he had the personal ...

Looks like the pic was taken at Pahaska. I'd have to double check, (check cabin details)but that's my first guess. His jacket looks very much like one Cody wore, but they were somewhat common for the time. Wonder if it was Cody's jacket? I could look at the Museum,...... Looking at various character...

I wouldnt worry about too much, particulalrly if you're going to run them in the Thompson. They still shouldnt be in +p range even if the priming was slightly hotter. Remington used to load metal penetrating loads (Highway Master?) for 45 auto, I think they had Thompsons in mind with those loads, an...

If you are dedicated to the Sharps, then that is all that will do, but Gemmer did make sporting rifles out of many comercially available guns at the time. My favorite is the trapdoor Gemmers. I have an original 1868 50-70 action I want to build into a trapdoor Gemmer. Uses nearly all Hawken type par...

I've never been able to get comfortable with a crescent butt, particularly with anything fairly powerful. I had the crescent cut off my Browning 1886 rifle and had a flat pad put on it. Finally found a shotgun butt for it. Some of the 94 commemoratives had pretty open crescents, and weren't too bad....

Some guns want to be full length sized. If the round is higher pressure, it may need to be full length sized, but most of the common lever gun rounds aren't very high pressure. I loaded 30-30's with a Lee Loader for years and it was fine. Frank, it's about marketing. It doesn't have to be useful to ...

I used a Lee loader when I first started loading way back in the 1900's. I recall that the problems I had with rounds chambering in the same gun was when I crimped too much and the case bulged out slightly below the crimp. I've used the Lyman 310 tools, and like them. They have their limitations als...

I have a book that quotes an officer in the Civil war commenting on the difference in caps for Colts and Starr pistols, the caps that would work for the Starr would break in pieces in the Colts, and the caps meant for Colts would not be set off reliably in the Starr. This reflects my experience. Som...
