Your store bought bullets were probably a lead-antimony alloy that is much harder than the 20-1 lead-tin that you cast. So your bullets "slug-up" from the pressure as exit the case and grab the rifling so they are spinning properly and go straight when they exit the muzzle; the hard-cast b...

Re: Flatbed semi-trailers - how come some flatter than others?
I just spent 21 months in Ann Arbor for a contract job I had. Saw those aluminum arched trailers a lot on I-94 heading into and out of Detroit (I would guess hauling coils of sheet metal for the car factories). What really surprised me though was the trailers with all the axles on them. I'm from Col...

Re: OT - GI's shoulda been issued .270's !
Yeah, you have to go back into WWI to find out why the U.S. stuck with the 30-06 cartridge. Remington tried to get rich with the British contracts, and got left holding the bag when the British canceled the contracts after Remington had already built thousands of rifles. So the U.S stepped in and bo...

Glad you're okay, but a tip for the future. Don't tie yourself to a tree when a tornado's in the area, get in a ditch or even just flat out on the ground instead. Tornado's pick things up because of the air pressure under them lifts, and trees have a lot of air under the branches. Much better to jus...

And then there is the theory that you don't have to worry about bolt thrust at all (unless you oil your ammo), but that lever guns will always blow out the bottom of the chamber due to the lack of frame support between the barrel and the magazine tube.

Re: SAAMI pressure 45 Colt vs 45 ACP
SAAMI specs are for the cartridge - the gun that fires the cartridge may be able to withstand a much higher pressure level. An old Colt SAA from the 1870's probably won't be able to withstand a pressure level of 21,000 CUP, even if a modern version made with much better modern steels can. Yet both a...

Lyman Jr's use the same size die as their 310 tong tool, and dies are still available in 32/20. So if you really want a dedicated 32/20 reloading press, a Lyman Jr. will work at least as well as any other.

Re: Time wasting, "what if" question, 22 Hornet in R92 or M94?
218 Bee is off of the 32/20 case, so find a 32/20 rifle to start with and all you need to do is re-barrel it. The 256 Win Mag is off the 357 case, so you can start with a 357 rifle. A 22 Hornet would need a lot of custom work, but really would be no different than the early 357 Magnum conversions. N...

I just wonder what would have been if MacArthur hadn't been such a skinflint and the M1 Garand had been issued in the 276 Pederson cartridge for which it had been designed. With a 10-shot, not 8-shot, clip and a 8.5 lb, instead of 10lb, rifle. Then you reduce the 276 cartridge in the 1950's for cont...

The powder difference is due to the copper bullets being lighter than lead bullets; it's not a difference in friction, lead has less friction against steel than copper. Lighter bullets leave the case sooner and accelerate faster, so you can use more powder behind them.
