It takes very little power to get a bullet through the skin and into the vitals of a deer. Fact is many times it'd get in there better at a lower speed than a higher speed. Reason is it'd mushroom less and therefore penetrate better. A good shot could take a little model 94 Marlin--with scope--cham...

In all seriousness, I believe TV to be a major factor in the differences between the eras being discussed. Think about it - prior to the popularization of TV, what did people do in the evenings? Interact with other people, read, play? Anything other than staring at the Idiot Box? Watching TV does no...

Not to hijack the thread, but I used the exploding-bottle technique when I taught my stepdaughter to shoot (she was circa 12 years old). I wanted her to know the serious power of firearms, and drama is a great helper. I showed her a little bitty .22 LR and then used the bullet to shoot a (previously...

Recall the Rule of 72: Divide 72 by the interest rate your money is earning. The result tells you how often, in years, your money doubles. A $1500 investment that is worth $3000 in ten years is approximately a 7.2% interest rate. Darned good for a risk-free rate of return, but nothing to crow about....

If any of you have access to a college library handy, all of those words will be listed in detail with their origins in the Oxford English Dictionary. Back in the '80's when I was an English Major, the OED consisted of IIRC, 27 volumes. It is THE definitive last word on the origins of the English L...

Re: 357 for deer
Its funny people think the 357 is too little for deer but just right for self defence.Go figure.I carry my 41 mag for self defence with 175 gr silver tip hollow points.I think the 357 mag will work on deer but there are alot better cartridges for it.I sold my 357 mag browning model 92 because I cou...

Where I hunt in Oregon is usually stand-type terrain. The season begins in late September/early October, so the woods are almost always crunchy as can be. We select stands on the opposite side of cover that usually gets pushed (unwittingly) by the impatient. Nearly all shots are with 100 yards. We (...

Sufficient energy to kill deer cleanly w/357
I was looking at Hornady's ballistic calculator on their web site http://www.hornady.com/ballistics/ballistics_calculator.php and I got to thinking about killing power. Assuming a 158 gr Hornady XTP-FP with a BC of .199 and a muzzle velocity of 2000fps, the energy in foot/pounds at 100 yards is 944....

Four questions:Hobie wrote:Using the 158 gr. Hornady XTP-FP I would load it over 18 gr. L'ilGun. The load is a dandy in my 1894C.
Why FP and not HP?
What kind of velocity do you get w/18grains of L'il Gun?
What is the max for this bullet and L'il Gun?
How would this work pressure-wise in a Rossi?

These avatars are just a wee bit small for the details - I am the guy who likes scopes. BTW what is a primo Browning 71 worth in standard? Might have an opportunity. If you found one on an auction site I might be the high bidder already! There's one on AA I'm bidding on: http://www.auctionarms.com/...

What's a Marlin 336AS?
Seeing as how I do not own a Marlin 30-30, I spotted one at the local pawn shop today. Crossbolt safety, model 336AS. Priced at $279 and he wouldn't budge. Microgroove, overall I'd rate at 97%.

My whole problem with the website is that it basically says that everything in the Bible that Jesus didn't say is null and void. That is rediculous. The whole Bible is inspired by God. Got my 348 ammo today
I bought 2 cases (unopened) of Winchester 200 grain Silvertips in 348 from Gunbroker. They came today and I am very pleased! As new, in great shape. Total price came out to $34.50 per box, including shipping. I'm set for quite a while for my 71. The username is LTE and he did great by me.

We're making a good start here. I'll tell ya, my two picks are on the heavy side and I could easily get along with an older model 94 Winchester or Model 92 Browning in 357 mag. I just kinda lean toward more power. I see the .348 model 71 as a nice compromise between the power of the smaller guns an...

Not that I expect to find a deal at a gun show, but what/when are the best shows in Oregon for levers? Who knows, I might find that B-92 357.
