Re: Hunting load for the .44-40
I use MT Bullet cast for years and still do for some guns but the price per hundred is not much different than the XTP's. Try the 200g .430..... think you will like them especially if the bore is a little rough. The .427 wont work well unless very soft to obturate to the bore....

Re: Hunting load for the .44-40
I have yet to slug a winchester 44 barrel that was under .429. The model 53 i had was .430 +. I have gone to using Hornady XTP 200g .430 with in my 92's excellent results (less than 1" @ 50yds and less than 2" @ 100yds). I load 18g 2400 @ abt 1560 fps which is the equivalent of winchester'...

Re: anyone here want to load 38-40 hunting loads for $$
what are you hunting? I certainly wouldn't use those anemic 977fps loads for deer, maybe rabbits. Those are Colt SAA velocities. In a 92 winchester you can easily and safely shoot 1500fps + in a rifle in good condition.

Question about jacketed bullet sizing
I just picked up a 1892 in 44 wcf......i know that for cast (which i mostly shoot)you generally size .001-.002 over groove diameter. I have some jacketed that are .001 over groove diameter. Are they ok to shoot in this gun? Thanks!

Re: .33 WCF / .338 Reloading Question.
My rifle (1886) likes 38g of 3031 with the Hornady FP. It produce about 2040 fps and one and a half inch groups at 100yds.

Re: jacketed bullet reloading question....
Joe, Thank you very much! Ive been reloading for rifles for years but this is my first time for a revolver. I will check the throat diameter of the colt and go from there. Thanks again!!

jacketed bullet reloading question....
Im reloading 45 LColt for a SAA...i know it is standard procedure to size cast bullets .001 + larger than groove diameter but is it ok for jacketed bullets to be .001 over groove diameter? I have some .452 jacketed and the barrel slugs .451. Thanks. Matt

bullet seating depth question...
I bought a box of the hornady 200g gummy tips to try in my 33wcf. Seating to the canelure leaves the boattail protruding from the bottom of the neck into the case maybe 3/16". Is this anything to worry about?

Re: Range Report: Original Winchester Model 53 44-40
Anyone know of a 200g gas check bullet for 44-40? I tried some lyman 215g gc that were intended for 44mag but they are a little too long from crimp groove to point.

Re: Range Report: Original Winchester Model 53 44-40
Kirk i have the same gun as you #1510. My bore slugs at .4295 and i have been using a .430 200g plain base bullet (would really like to try .431). I also like 16g of 2400 but my chrono measures this load at approximately 1420fps ave. I wonder why the difference in velocity?

Re: Hawk bullet for Marlin 1893 38-55
I use Hawk bullets in my .380 bore 38-55 circa 1905. The bore is a little rough but i get 1 1/2" groups at 100 yds. The bullets seem to obturate well and fill the bore. Just wish they were a little cheaper....
