Re: Politics - McCain taps AK governor Sarah Palin as VP

It's Alaska's oil. She made sure the that the citizens get their fair share from the companies that extract it. Another plus is she didn't use it to just fatten up government, she made sure that the citizens themselves got checks. I'm another voter that wasn't going to vote for McCain. She's got me ...

The 1894's in 45 colt that "Big 5" sold have round barrels and hardwood (birch?) stocks.

Hunting with cast 30 caliber bullets

Howdy,
I picked up one of Ranch Dog's excellent molds and the bullets it produces shoot very well in my Marlin 336's. I typically hunt with my 45-70 but I'm thinking about giving skinny (cast) bullets a try. How fast to they need to go to poke two holes in a deer?

Re: OT - Joe Horn Cleared By Pasadina (TX) Grand Jury

I believe a criminal should expect that his profession IS dangerous and could cost him his life. The current attitude seems to be that individuals are not responsible for their own actions. It is a fact that habitual criminals have little fear of laws or law enforcers. What if Joe Horn had NOT shot ...

I sight mine in to print just on top of the bead at 50 yards. At 100 yards I cover the bullseye with the bead. 255 grain cast bullet chugging down range at 1150 fps out of a Marlin 1894CB.

I have a chance to test that this weekend on some rams. Hopefully it works.

Of course you really don't have that long due to a couple of alert Labradors.

On Elk and Black Bear I can say the 45-70 on game performance is devastating. Complete penetration and no tracking required with 425 gr cast bullets jogging along at a mere 1400 fps.

If recoil is what you desire, that can easily be achieved though I doubt the performance on game will improve.

Range Report: Marlin 1895 LTD III

Just picked it up this morning and HAD to shoot it today! http://www.grovestreet.com/PicPage.do?id=1269347 I didn't have much 45-70 loaded up but I took what I had. First up was some 405 grain Laser-Cast RNFP PB over a 25 gr charge of SR4759 (always double check your data ) a WLR in a Starline case....

Ditto what everyone has said. For me it is simply a matter of preference. The accuracy advantage of a bolt gun is not apparent to me once I'm in the field. A handgun is easier to pack than a lever carbine but not much else is. The fun factor is higher - for me anyway. I like the aesthetics too.

I've done a good deal of hunting with my 1895GS guide gun and it is hard for me to imagine a more perfect hunting tool. A couple of Elk seasons back the buckle broke on my sling and I elected to just pack the GG around in my hands rather than try to fix it. I was impressed how easily it carried even...

A powder worth trying if you aren't looking for max velocity is SR4759. 25 gr under a 405gr cast bullet gets me right around 1454 fps in the 1895CB and a little less in my Guide Gun. It's a load that is accurate in both and burns a lot cleaner than AA5744. No powder zombies at all. 28gr gets me just...

I shoot a lot of em in 30-30, 30-06, 45acp, 45 colt and 45-70. In 30 cal I use the 170 gr PB but if I drive em' over 1400 fps I put a gas check on them. PB they are great 5 grains of Red Dot in my 30-30. No leading issues and as accurate as jacketed bullets out to 50 yards. A little Lee Liquid Alox ...

I spotted a shorter barreled Marlin 1895 CB with the octagon barrel in the racks on a recent visit to the fun store. It looked exactly like my 1895CB except for the shorter (20?) barrel. Now I want one. Were they a special run?

Lee Loader 30-30

Out of curiosity I picked up a Lee Loader in 30-30. I was impressed by the innovation and simplicity. As an experiment I loaded a batch to compare with a load that I commonly use on my single stage press. It took me a while but once you get the technique and develop a rhythm it goes pretty well. For...
