Re: WACA Members on Paco Kelly's Lever Guns
I was for a little while. I too enjoyed some of the magazine content. But flipping through my saved issues I found more advertisements for auctions and collector's trying to build their collections than actual feature content related to the firearms. I likewise came to the realization that at age 28...

Re: Early 92 action 218 Bee pressure safety
To update the thread, I looked up my serial number. 1910 is the date of manufacture according to both the savage99 site and Madis' The Winchester Book. Since it's pre WW1, I'm guessing I wouldn't want to push a load beyond that of a (mild) 25/20 load. The intent has always been to shoot cast bullets...

Re: Early 92 action 218 Bee pressure safety
I'm away from the rifle but I'll look at the serial when I get back home and report back. I do reload, and bought dies, and thought that since factory 218 is so hard to come by, that I might stand a better chance of buying brass and loading cast bullets. I'm not looking for screaming performance lik...

Re: Early 92 action 218 Bee pressure safety
I'm pretty certain it's a re barrel. The finish around the "92" in -MODEL 92- is smuddgy looking and matte in comparison to the rest of the barrel which has some blue left. The receiver has no finish left. The stock is a rifle style with crescent but plate and forend is like that of a Mode...

Early 92 action 218 Bee pressure safety
My father and I bought a '92 in 218 Bee some years ago, knowing it wasn't original and we were excited to shoot it. The rifle appears to have a barrel from a 43 or 65 but stamping was changed on the barrel to say -MODEL 92- (appears just like any pre 64 barrel markings). We shot it on one occasion d...

Re: Recoil pad for a Win 1886 lever gun
I use a leather slip on pad with a velcro closure that works very well but I've never shot a full grunt load out of my rifle either. I wanted to have a sling on mine but did not want to modify the stock in any way. I tied the rear of the sling around the butt with some cord and used the slip on pad ...

Snagged a 64- Date of Manufacture?
A certain Winchester 64 followed me home yesterday and I was hoping someone could help me with a manufacture date. The best I can come up with online is 1942. It's a 120XXXX range gun. Something about pulling the floorplate out of the 94 action made me prefer the '92 and '86 more, but the feel of th...

1886 pistol grip conversion
Does anyone know if a Miroku 71 stock, lower tang, and lever could be fitted up to an 86? I'm assuming that the upper tang is the same dimensions on both. I really like my extra light and I love 45-70, and I'd love to have a 71 but I can't justify loading the 348. Any thoughts? Thanks! Good shooting...

Re: USFA 1873 SA 44/40 44 Special
I recently had the chance to shoot a USFA 44 Special. What a pistol! Though the 2nd Generation Colt holds a special place in my heart, the USFA is a better pistol, if not as good in my view. It had a very smooth action and a very tight lockup, with no rotational slop in the cylinder, and no slack or...

I'll also put a plug in for a 110 grain soft point and IMR 4895. Down in South Texas we have used them on deer and hogs with great success. Shot placement is crucial, however, as it is with any smallbore cartridge. However its accuracy and flat shooting trajectory will instill confidence in the shoo...

Re: Winchester of Browning 1886
I have a Winchester Extra Light model from the first USRAC run back in the early 2000's. I shot it and was having misfires due to the rebounding hammer that purists detest. The fix for that took me about 15 minutes to accomplish and this rifle has now replaced my bolt gun for deer hunting. It is a j...

218 Bee question
I have an older Model 92 with a 218 barrel on it (not original). I shot some factory ammunition through it this weekend for the first time. It sounds like a lot of 30-30 rifles I've heard of in that the primers back out some and there is a slight but noticeable expansion towards the base of the case...

Pressure wave theory ringing chambers? Anybody believe it?
Hello everybody, As I have mentioned recently, along with many many others in the past, Unique and cast bullets have been particularly good to me in my 45-70. However I continue to read voraciously all that I can on this cartridge and loads for it. Lately I have stumbled upon commentary, I believe o...

Re: Deer hunting with 45-70 Unique loads?
Thanks for the replies! 1400 f/s is quicker than I thought. I have tried 25 gr. 2400 with good consistent results also, but it groups in about 2" at 50 yards, whereas my Unique loads group in about 1.5" at 50 yards. I don't mean to quibble over MOA and groups but I think it's important to ...

Deer hunting with 45-70 Unique loads?
I have a very very accurate load in my Japanese 1886 of 14 grains Unique with a local store bought cast 405. While I have no indication of what my velocity actually is, I'm thinking this isn't too far off original BP factory load velocity. With deer hunting at 100 yards +/- in mind, what kind of per...

Re: Winchester 1886 Takedown
Howdy Frank! The general consensus is that the rebound feature causes inconsistant primer strikes/ignition and therefore accurracy loss. I have an 86 extra light and my particular rifle had a missfire about one out of 10 shots so I ground off the the rebounding leg a little bit and all is well now. ...

Winchester 55 or B-71?
I'm saving for my next lever gun and as you'll recall my past threads have been 92 related. Well I've waffled. In the quest for something different I'm considering either a 55 in 30 before they become too expensive, or a browning 71. I've always wanted a 71, I love that action and pistol grip, but I...

A real treat for me this summer was to hear Eugene Cernan speak at Oshkosh; geez what a guy! A major topic of course was our halting shuttle flights, and both he, Jim Lovell and Burt Rutan were mighty unhappy about handing the keys to the Ruskies. And how right they are. After working so many years ...

Hypothetical free floating winchester 92/94 barrel anyone?
I was just tossing the idea around in my head and while I realize that it is not an accuracy guarantee or even necessary for the intended use of a lever gun, I think it would be an interesting concept. I believe the Marlin Express chambered rifles have such a configuration. Possibly "unitize&qu...

Gunsmithing question: creating a new dovetail
After seeing Pete44ru's neat looking button magazine rifle I'd like to try to do the same. The only problem is my Rossi is an Interarms which has the front sight on the barrel band. So my conversion would require two dovetails, one for front sight post and one for a magazine hanger. Can this be done...

Re: What is your preferred 92 clone cartridge?
Well I love the 357 like so many of you do. I have a Rossi and my dad has a Browning that has spent all it's life in a saddle scabbard with finish wear to show for it, but that's the spirit of the thing ya know? I enjoy my Rossi but it is heavier than the Browning, shorter in length of pull, and I'm...

What is your preferred 92 clone cartridge?
I'm tempted by another 20" 92. Either will go the Rossi route and customize it or save up some pennies and try to get a Browning/Winchester. This will be a working on the ranch rifle. Given the use parameter of general utility, snake, hog and walkabout deer rifle, what caliber do you like? I al...

I was going to put in a plug for Walker and McNelly as lawmen, also for the Dallas FBI man that took down John Dillenger. Any good Chiappa 92 experiences out there?
I looked at some Chiappa 92's this weekend and they were very pretty rifles. But the bad press sticks out in my mind. Is anybody pleased with theirs? How 'bout recent production. I'd rather have a miroku 92 but a Chiappa is sooo tempting with no safety... And I think NKJ posted something about swapp...

Howdy everybody! After slinging small 270 and 30 cal bullets at our south Texas whitetail for years I said to heck with it and bought an 86 Ex light USRAC manufacture. Howdy again to everyone and thanks for the warm welcome! Question is pertaining to an old Rossi 92 carbine. It shoots and has a great trigger but needs a little action honing to be smooth.
