I haven't tried the XTP's but the 180gr Gold Dot is nasty at 1400fps. I found these on sale for $28 bucks a hundred . So I got a few hundred and was happy to find out they shoot very good in the 38wcf. After initial load testing was complete , I really don't shoot these often , simply because getti...

Agree 100% on the .357 comments. I have some wonderful sixguns that chamber the cartridge but it will never be a favorite. The very best of .357 sixguns get converted to something more interesting, like the two projects I've got going now. There will always be something special about the ole .38WCF.

It's nuts! I haven't needed percussion caps in a while but it seems in my restocking of supplies during a period of political calm, I only bought large primers. Last week I bought a box each of small rifle and small pistol and the tally was over $200! Unbelievable. I'm used to them being $30-$35 a b...

Very nice! It's strange, as much as I love the 38, and always have room for more, I have never owned a SAA or any other handgun in that chambering. I probably should have looked for one years ago. A friend had a beautiful 1st gen 5.5" Colt about 25 years ago. I should have snagged it. It's an ...

I think the .38-40 deserves to be far more popular than it is. My .38-40 long gun is a Uberti 1873 Deluxe Sporting Rifle but I'd love to have a nice 1892 in the chambering. https://photos.imageevent.com/newfrontier45/rifles/large/IMG_7316b.jpg I pair with this 3rd generation Colt but I've got a Cima...

The 250gr Keith is classic but honestly, I've killed a whole slew of stuff with generic 240gr bevel base SWC's at 1100-1400fps. WFN's make a bigger hole but for deer sized game, the SWC is plenty.

Re: Pistol cartridge carbines and twist rate
Okay, I noticed that the Taylor's 1892 looks just like the Dixie Gun Works version and they're both made by Chiappa. The DGW listing says they're 1-16" twist. They're also drilled & tapped for a tang sight and I don't see a safety. So it very well could be that all the newer Chiappa 1892's ...

I'm not 100% sure about Taylor's but I think they are Chiappas. I was soured on them when their `76's came out and not only did they have function issues but their wood grain was painted on. Still, if they have a faster twist, it may be worth it. Although I also have to weigh the cost of a rifle aga...

During the unpleasantness of 2020, I decided to spend more time with defensive guns than the usual sixguns and levers. Built half a dozen AR's that year but was very late to the AK game. The Old Model .45's are actually rarer than flat-tops, as they were only produced for two years. Shooter-grade examples usually go for at least $500. Which makes me REALLY lament the $300 one I missed several years ago.
